Sustainability

Our commitment to sustainability extends far beyond our classrooms. Here at Miss Daisy’s nursery schools, we instil children with an awareness of how to be mindful of our environment and to start to see how their individual actions impact their wider communities.

As part of Dukes Education’s focus areas for sustainability in 2024 and 2025, Miss Daisy’s has introduced the following pillars to ensure that sustainability and eco-stewardship forms part of the early years curriculum – EYFS.

Energy efficiency:

Miss Daisy’s nursery schools are now all on green energy tariffs, with smart meters fitted.

We are introducing an ‘Energy Monitor’ in our nursery schools who’s role will be to challenge energy wastage and ensure we are all mindful of the energy we use.

Posters will shortly be displayed in our nurseries with tips on how to save energy (these will be printed using eco inks on sustainably-sourced paper).

Top-tips will be communicated to parents through our parent app, with ways to save energy at home.

Waste reduction:

We are conducting a central review of our refuse and recycling contractors, as well as consumables suppliers.

Our on-site bins are all now labelled in line with local recycling requirements.

Activities around plastics and recycling are now built in to our ‘Little Learners’ curriculum.

We are encouraging second-hand swaps of clothing and toys amongst our family communities.

Habitat creation:

We are creating a central overview of all of our outdoor areas, to ensure spaces for wildlife can be created.

We are making insect homes and bird feeders for our schools and to take home.

Many of our nurseries now have outdoor planting areas, or indoor gardens to grow wildlife-attracting plants to take home.

Green travel:

We are speaking to parents about the routes and methods of transport they take to nursery, with discussions and displays to highlight the importance of reducing travel by car.

As part of our parent survey, we will look to see what proportion of children walk, cycle, scoot, bus, tube or travel by car to school.

Awareness days:

Our sustainability calendar is full of resources and ideas to bring sustainability into each nursery day.

We will celebrate local, national  and international initiatives that emphasise the importance of sustainability.

We will encourage children to take learnings home and share with the friends the things they do and see around the local community, that have an impact on protecting our planet.

As well as these key areas, all of our nurseries will be applying for the Eco-Schools Green Flag Award which demonstrates the tangible positive impact that our school communities are making.
